I confess that I payed more attention to Bogart than to Johnson, but I'll be sure to focus on Johson the next time I watch the film.
Don't forget to read my contribution to the blogathon! :)
Cheers!
Le
http://www.criticaretro.blogspot.com
Lêhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/02419693749682458647noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6917634143872972680.post-8858802283688544712017-08-26T14:31:19.249-05:002017-08-26T14:31:19.249-05:00I have to cut Robert Francis a little slack given ...I have to cut Robert Francis a little slack given the actors surrounding him; he just wasn't up to the challenge, though. It's really the cast that makes the movie work like you mention. So many are giving some of their best performances. He seems increasingly weighed down, and we feel his inner turmoil.

This is one of my fave movies – the cast is really on top of their game. (Except for Robert Francis whose delivery, as you said, is not a stellar feature of this film.)Silver Screeningshttps://www.blogger.com/profile/04955048716754142299noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6917634143872972680.post-51364223835298160182017-08-26T04:46:39.081-05:002017-08-26T04:46:39.081-05:00I saw The Caine Mutiny years ago. I recall Bogart of course, and Francis. I had quite forgotten Johnson played a role in it. I should give it another look.Quiggyhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/12434473473185065992noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6917634143872972680.post-74837436168999911002017-08-25T22:16:56.857-05:002017-08-25T22:16:56.857-05:00Thanks Michaela! The final act is amazing, and everyone is at the top of their game. I was stunned by Bogart's performance, and I'm a big fan of his. It's something to see. I'll definitely be recording this the next time it appears on TCM. Having Bogart play a craven martinet works so well, and the same could be said of Fred MacMurray as well. He's remembered as playing nice guys, but his best roles--this, The Apartment, and Double Indemnity--have him being either morally questionable or outright nasty.SJHoneywellhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/13550007053995112090noreply@blogger.com
