I still need to see The Verdict, but all the others that you've mentioned are great. I think it's trickier because Lumet doesn't have the obvious distinguishing traits like Scorsese or Kubrick. Wilder is a great one for comparison; both realized that the story and the writing is still the most essential part of a movie. There are few filmmakers with such a strong body of work - he has to be up there with Spielberg, Scorsese, Wilder, Kubrick, Hitchcock etc., as one of Hollywood's greatest auteurs.
