Nice post. I actually hadn't really thought too much on whether the shoes were magical. I may have to do some reading on that side of it. The love story seems really forced and I don't believe that the shoes were truly magical, which some people believe. Thanks for the write up.Maxhttp://www.impassionedcinema.comnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6917634143872972680.post-40895127916936447102012-02-29T14:19:52.964-06:002012-02-29T14:19:52.964-06:00Bob, I see your point about the big and emotional ...Bob, I see your point about the big and emotional side of the movie. I'll admit that melodrama isn't my favorite genre, and that feeling definitely played a role in my thoughts about the Red Shoes. Even so, it was still worth seeing. Everything is BIG and EMOTIONAL (even if it doesn't deserve to be) in order to set up the conflict between living your life for love or for art - it's not done so much through story and character, but through music and artifice. Been awhile since I've watched it though...

But yeah, the ballet is phenomenal.Bob Turnbullhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/02243657105760780425noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6917634143872972680.post-35774488296004283492012-02-28T09:43:57.613-06:002012-02-28T09:43:57.613-06:00John, I agree that some of the visuals in the ball...John, I agree that some of the visuals in the ballet sequence are amazing. It took some serious technical expertise to pull that together, especially given the capabilities in 1948. There's really nothing like it.Danhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/12351431577484530230noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6917634143872972680.post-42129683786654926352012-02-28T09:28:08.654-06:002012-02-28T09:28:08.654-06:00Well said, Steve. If we don't buy into this romance, then the final conflict ends up just being silly. I definitely want to check out more of the Powell and Pressburger movies in the future. They did a marathon on Filmspotting a little while back, and a lot of those films sounded excellent. I remember at the end of the film being so surprised by the romance angle that my eyebrows went up to the top of their range.

Black Narcissus and The Life and Death of Colonel Blimp are far better examples of what Powell and Pressburger could do.SJHoneywellhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/13550007053995112090noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6917634143872972680.post-33640640608356151352012-02-28T00:08:24.903-06:002012-02-28T00:08:24.903-06:00I watched this just about a year ago after hearing...I watched this just about a year ago after hearing that Black Swan had drawn so much inspiration from it. The ballet sequence really is almost mind-blowing given that it was 1948. It's definitely what will stick with me about this film for years.Johnhttp://tdylf.comnoreply@blogger.com
